Annual losses of N and P to freshwaters worldwide nearly doubled over the twentieth century. Agriculture now represents over 50% of these N and P losses. N and P retention doubled (in rivers, dams and reservoirs). Also nearly 400 mtN have accumulated in groundwaters worldwide.
