Article of Pieper M., Michalke A. & Gaugler T., entitled Calculation of external climate costs for food highlights inadequate pricing of animal products and published in Nature Communication 11, 6117 (2020) puts a price tag on the external costs of meat, dairy and plant production in terms of their greenhouse gas emissions, and makes the case for organic farming being more efficient. It shows that if the true costs of food production were reflected in the retail price paid by the consumer, the price gap between conventional and organic food would be considerably less, making organic much more competitive.

SHORT ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea. The project is part-financed by the European Union. This website reflects only the view of the Coalition Clean Baltic.
