CCB's "Report on Invasive Alien Species of regional concern for the Baltic Sea Region - focus on aquatic crustaceans and terrestrial carnivorans" is now available on-line. We encourage you to check it!

Invasive alien (non-indigenous) species are at the forefront of factors di-rectly threatening biodiversity, being re-sponsible for 20% of known animal ex-tinctions with identified cause of extinction. Invasive alien species often generate risks to human health, have a negative impact on ecosystem services and, consequently, are responsible for significant economic losses. The scale of the problem is evidenced by the fact that the number of non-native species in Europe is estimated at around 12,000, of which 10-15% are invasive, and the eco-nomic costs they cause exceed EUR 12 billion annually. It is estimated that the worldwide cost of damages associated with invasive species exceeds USD 1.4 trillion per year.

The aim of this report is to assess the impact of invasive alien carnivoran mammals and aquatic crustaceans on the Baltic Sea Region ecosystems, as well as to increase awareness on invasive alien species in the CCB members and the general public.

SHORT ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea. The project is part-financed by the European Union. This website reflects only the view of the Coalition Clean Baltic.
