Agriculture and Environment Forum

HELCOMAgriculture and Environment Forum (HELCOM AGRI/ENVFORUM) enhances dialogue between agricultural and environmentalauthorities on the development and application of sustainableagricultural practices with the least environmental impact on the BalticSea.

Focus

Agriculturalpractices for reduced nutrient leakage are key focus areas for theHELCOM AGRI/ENV Forum, bearing in mind that the agricultural sector is amain source of land-based nutrient pollution of the Baltic Sea. 

Background

TheHELCOM AGRI/ENV Forum was established at the HELCOM Moscow MinisterialMeeting in 2010. Based on the good experiences with the Fisheries andEnvironment Forum, established two years earlier, it was considereduseful to replicate this experience within the agri-environmental field.In the forum, agricultural and environmental authorities have thepossibility to meet, discuss and jointly take forward actions towardsreaching the targets in the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP).

Participantsin the Forum are representatives from both the agriculture andenvironmental protection bodies from the HELCOM Contracting Parties, andObserver organisations.

Main aims

HELCOM AGRI/ENV Forum has the following aims (in brief):

  • toimprove communication and cooperation between agricultural andenvironmental administrations as well as with other relevantinstitutions in the Baltic Region;
  • to promote, initiateand follow-up activities which can facilitate the implementation ofagriculture related actions in the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan;
  • to acknowledge and build on relevant existing national and international legislative frameworks and policy instruments;
  • todiscuss utilising tools of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) toimplement the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan and the HELCOM MoscowMinisterial Declaration and to discuss and exchange views on theavailable funding programmes.

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea.
