Denmark has adopteda new policy to reduce aquatic nitrogen emissions, based on definingspecific targeted actions in 3000 areas (average 1500 ha) based on WaterFramework Directive Basin Management Plans. Farmers will be able tochoose the most cost-effective actions for their area. This will allowgrowth of agriculture in some areas, alongside protection of fjord andgroundwater in more vulnerable areas. The objective is to reduce totalnitrogen emissions from agriculture by 1200 tonnes in 2019 and 3500tonnes by 2021. The new regulation comes with 12 million ? to supportnitrogen and climate actions, including precision agriculture, and 3million ? for bioeremediation and biorefineries. A key action will beplanting nitrogen catch crops after crops, with a subsidy of 70?/ha.

SHORT ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea. The project is part-financed by the European Union. This website reflects only the view of the Coalition Clean Baltic.
