Climate change will affect agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region in manyways. The expected warmer climate in Northern Europe will have aninfluence on crop production, animal husbandry and health as well as onthe natural flora and fauna. Crop yields will probably increase in theNordic region and it may also be possible to grow new crops. In animalproduction, these aspects allow new and potentially less expensive feedingredients to be used. In southern Europe, the warm climate willprobably reduce crop productivity because of drought. However, projectedclimate scenarios indicate that there will be large variations betweenregions and years with too dry conditions in some years and too wetconditions in other years. Many pests and diseases will also become moreprevalent in both animals and plants. Hence, there is a need to developstrategies to cope with this new situation and to mitigate the negativeeffects of climate change while taking advantage of the warmer climatein our region.

SHORT ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea. The project is part-financed by the European Union. This website reflects only the view of the Coalition Clean Baltic.
