The EU Biogas Action project (Horizon 2020) presentsten innovative biogas plants, producing renewable energy frombiowastes, seaweed and/or manures. In all cases, nutrients are recycledby use in agriculture. In some cases, digestate is used directly onfields, in others it is treated by solid-liquid separation, pasteurisation or composting; The ten examples include Terragr?Eau(Féternes, Haute Savoie, France), where the key objective is to ensurecollection of biowastes to avoid pollution of the Evian water catchment(Danone, see ESPP eNews n°16). In Denmark, Solrod Biogas producesmethane from around 200 000 t/y of seaweed, dairy and brewerybyproducts and manure and the digestate is used a fertiliser by farmers. In The Netherlands, Greendal Vergisting producesmethane from 52 000 t/y of mainly pig and chicken manure, and thedigestate is used either to produce algae or is pasteurised and exportedas fertiliser.

SHORT ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea. The project is part-financed by the European Union. This website reflects only the view of the Coalition Clean Baltic.
