Fertilizers Europe organised on 28thMay the first meeting to present implementation of the new EUFertilising Products Regulation (FPR). Speakers included the EuropeanCommission, national regulators, CEN industry and scientific experts.Kirsi Ekroth-Manssila, Head of Unit Chemicals at DG GROW, summarised thechanges the FPR will bring for fertiliser producers, technologyproviders, farmers and for environmental protection. She outlined tasksnow outstanding for FPR implementation: setting-up conformity assessment(notified bodies) and market surveillance, defining criteria onagronomic efficiency and safety for by-products, defining criteria forbiodegradation of polymers in control release fertilisers, new Europeantesting standards, guidance on labelling, FRP ?FAQs? document. AndreasSteinbüchler, Borealis, presented the company?s work with the City ofVienna to recycle back to mineral fertilisers phosphorus from the city?ssewage sludge incineration ash. He outlined Borealis? expectations inand beyond the FRP: coherent implementation across EU Member States, clear and workable criteria for by-products, an EU label for recyclednutrient fertilisers and assessment of fertilising products? NutrientUse Efficiency (NUE). Patrick du Jardin, Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech,Université de Li?ge, presented the potential of biostimulants inimproving fertiliser Nutrient Use Efficiency, underlining that theopportunities offered by their inclusion in the FRP. Yan Chys, Yara andconvener of CEN TC 260 / WG7 summarised the need for EU standards fortesting methods to accompany the FPR and the considerable challenges:number of new standards needed, scope beyond simple analytical methods(sampling; safety; additive specific; performance oriented;environmental), time needed for stakeholder consultation, ring testingand in some cases field trials.

SHORT ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea. The project is part-financed by the European Union. This website reflects only the view of the Coalition Clean Baltic.
