Events » XX Anniversary International Environmental Forum Baltic Sea Day

On March 21-22, 2019, representatives ofthe Baltic countries gathered in Saint-Petersburg (Russia) for the 20thtime to exchange experiences, discuss the achieved results and futureplans, moreover ways of reaching the ambitious goals in conservation andprotection of the Baltic Sea environment.

The Agenda of the Forum focused onSustainable development for the Baltic Sea ? future outlook and updatingof the Baltic Sea action plan and contribution to the UN SDGs 2030.

The agenda of the 2019 Forumreflected current environmental trends and addressed the issue ofsustainable development for the Baltic Sea, the Baltic Sea Action Planand its update, as well as contributions to the UN SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.It was elaborated together with the Ministry of Natural Resources andEnvironment of the Russian Federation, HELCOM Secretariat and Committeefor Nature Use, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety of St.Petersburg, and included expert day (21st of March) with round tables and panel discussions and solemn day (22ndof March) with plenary session and awarding ceremony. Regional NutrientRecycling Strategy to reduce nutrient inputs to and eutrophication ofthe Baltic Sea was specifically addressed in panel discussions in theframe of the plenary session. Other topics such as nature conservation,cooperation for shipping pollution reducing, fisheries in the BalticSea, environmental consequences of physical damage to the sea floor,marine litter were in the Forum programme during expert day.

Project Industrial animal farms in the Baltic Sea Region - sustainable practices to reduce nutrient loads is a part of a long-term campaign of the Coalition Clean Baltic and Green Federation "GAJA", aiming to reduce the negative impact of large-scale animal production on the environment and local communities in the Baltic Sea Region, particularly by reducing nutrient run-off into the sea.
